Jewellery Care

As with all jewellery that has been made from precious metals, Aurelium jewellery is delicate and should be handled and stored with care.

Below are some tips for looking after your handcrafted jewellery so that you can enjoy its beautiful shine for many special moments to come.

Tips for sterling silver and gold-plated jewellery:
  • Apply moisturiser, makeup, perfume and hairspray before putting on jewellery.
  • Avoid contact with household chemicals and chlorine.
  • Do not wear while exercising, swimming, cleaning, showering, or sleeping.
  • After wearing your jewellery, rub it with a soft cloth (e.g. microfibre) before storing it away.
  • Store your jewellery in a small ziplock bag with an anti-tarnish tab (provided free of charge with every jewellery order). This will help to prevent your jewellery from rubbing against other surfaces and getting scratched.

Additional notes for sterling silver jewellery:

  • Sterling silver naturally tarnishes over time when exposed to sulphur and acids that are found in our environment. Storing your sterling silver jewellery in the ziplock bag mentioned above will help to slow down the formation of tarnish.
  • To remove tarnish from your sterling silver jewellery, use a polishing cloth specifically designed for use with silver (provided free of charge with every silver jewellery order).
  • For stubborn tarnish, briefly soak your sterling silver jewellery in a bowl filled with warm water and a drop of mild dishwashing liquid (not anti-bacterial), then gently scrub with a soft toothbrush. See here for full instructions.

Additional notes for gold-plated jewellery:

  • Aurelium jewellery is plated with a 2 micron layer of 14ct gold.
  • Gold-plating naturally wears off with regular wear, especially on necklaces and rings that experience more contact and friction with the body. Please take particular care to follow the tips above, especially removing your jewellery before exercising, swimming, cleaning, showering and sleeping.
  • Please be aware that you will be able to enjoy your gold-plated pieces (particularly necklaces and rings) for longer if they are not worn on a daily basis.
  • To clean your gold-plated jewellery, wipe with a soft, lint-free cloth. DO NOT clean with a silver polishing cloth (these are impregnated with tarnish-removing compound and are for sterling silver only). If this does not restore the shine to your gold-plated jewellery, briefly soak your jewellery in a bowl filled with warm water and a drop of mild dishwashing liquid (not anti-bacterial), then gently scrub with a soft toothbrush. See here for full instructions.
  • Replating your jewellery in the future is possible if you wish to refresh the gold layer. Please contact me for more information.
